Aplastic Anemia and Treatment
About Aplastic Anemia
Aplastic anemia, also called pancytopenia, is a condition where bone marrow does not produce enough new cells to replenish blood cells. Typically, anemia refers to low red blood cell counts, but aplastic anemia patients have lower counts of all three blood cell types: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The cause of aplastic anemia is unknown but in some cases may be attributed to exposure to certain toxins.
Signs and symptoms may include:
- Fatigue and weakness
- Pale skin
- Easy bruising
- Frequent infections
Aplastic Anemia Treatment
Aplastic anemia is an unusual condition and can lead to infection, bleeding, and the need for blood transfusions. Fortunately, there are a variety of successful treatments for this disorder which include the medications ATG and Cyclosporin. Some patients can be treated with high-dose Cytoxan and some require a bone marrow transplant.
Patients have varying degrees of severity, but a patient who has severe aplastic anemia needs immediate treatment.
