Blood Clots and Treatment
About Blood Clots
A blood clot, or thrombus, is a clumping of mostly platelets of red and white blood cells in the blood stream. If a blood clot is large enough it can cut off blood flow through a blood vessel, which can cause serious injury to bodily organs. If a thrombus dislodges and becomes free-floating, it is called an embolus. Some patients have very subtle symptoms or no symptoms at all.
Signs and symptoms of blood clots may include:
- Leg cramps, especially at night
- Bluish or whitish skin discoloration
- Swelling
- Redness
- Worsening leg pain, especially when bending the foot
Blood Clots Treatment
Blood clots are common in the population. Sometimes the cause can be determined but occasionally the cause is unknown. There are some new and exciting medications, called anticoagulants, which can be used for the treatment of blood clots. It is also important that the complications of treatment be addressed and managed. The length of anticoagulation therapy is also important and there are guidelines that help us determine the most safe and effective management of blood clots.
