Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia / Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) and Treatment

About Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia / Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)

Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) is a slowly progressing disease in which too many white blood cells are made in the bone marrow. Also called chronic granulocytic leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, and chronic myeloid leukemia.

It is usually associated with a chromosome abnormality called the Philadelphia chromosome. In CML, leukemia cells tend to build up in the body over time, but in many cases people don't have any symptoms for at least a few years. In time, the cells can also invade other parts of the body, including the spleen. CML can also change into a fast-growing acute leukemia that can invade almost any organ in the body.

Signs and symptoms of CML may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Anemia
  • Infections
  • Easy bruising

Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia / Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) Treatment

The two chronic leukemias are chronic myelogenous leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.  The treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia has undergone a revolution in the past ten years.  There are medicines that are not chemotherapy that directly correct the underlying genetic abnormality that causes this condition.  Most patients are alive who are taking this drug with no evidence of disease.
