Gaucher Disease and Treatment
About Gaucher Disease
Gaucher Disease is a genetic disease in which a fatty substance (lipid) accumulates in cells and certain organs including the spleen, liver, kidneys, lungs, brain, and bone marrow.
Signs and symptoms of Gaucher Disease may include:
- Enlarged spleen (splenomegaly)
- Yellowish –brown skin discoloration
- Yellow fatty deposits on the white of the eye
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Bone and joint pain
- Osteoporosis
- Muscle twitches
Gaucher Disease Treatment
People with Gaucher Disease usually respond well to treatment. There is enzyme replacement therapy that is given as outpatient treatment and dramatically improves the patient’s quality and length of life.
The side effects of Gaucher Disease, which include blood problems, enlargement of the liver and spleen and bone disease can be significantly improved with a simple outpatient infusion. This usually does not have any serious consequences and is a remarkable treatment for patients with this disorder. These treatments are offered regularly at the Sandler Cancer Treatment Center.
