Hemoglobinopathies and Treatment

About Hemoglobinopathies

Hemoglobinopathies are a genetic group of disorders resulting in the abnormal structure of hemoblogin, the part of red blood cells carrying oxygen in the blood. Common hemoglobinopathies include sickle-cell disease, which leads to sickle-cell anemia, and hemoglobin C disease. Hemoglobinopathies are most common in ethnic populations from Africa, the Mediterranean basin, and Southeast Asia.

Signs and symptoms of hemoglobinopathies may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Breathlessness
  • Anemia
  • Fatigue
  • Delayed growth and puberty in children
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

Hemoglobinopathies Treatment

The treatment depends on the type of hemoglobinopathy and the extent of complications caused by this condition. For patients with sickle-cell disease, ongoing treatment is usually required, including taking a folic acid supplement. Antibiotics and vaccines are given to prevent bacterial infections, which are common in children with sickle cell disease. Blood transfusions are used to treat a sickle cell crisis. Other treatments may be necessary depending on other complications resulting from hemoglobinopathy.
