Hemolytic Anemia and Treatment
About Hemolytic Anemia
Hemolytic anemia is form of anemia caused by hemolysis, the abnormal breakdown of red blood cells (RBCs) either in the blood vessels (intravascular hemolysis) or elsewhere in the body (extravascular). It has numerous possible underlying causes, ranging from relatively harmless to life-threatening. The general classification of hemolytic anemia is either inherited or acquired.
Signs and symptoms may include:
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Jaundice (yellowish skin)
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Gallstones
- Edema (fluid build-up)
Hemolytic Anemia Treatment
The cause of the hemolytic anemia will determine the proper treatment. In severe immune-related hemolytic anemia, steroid therapy is sometimes necessary. For other patients, blood transfusions are the primary treatment. Sometimes splenectomy (partial or complete removal of the spleen) can be helpful when extravascular hemolysis is the cause of the anemia.
