Hemophilia and Treatment
About Hemophilia
Hemophilia is a group of hereditary genetic disorders that impair the body's ability to control blood clotting or coagulation, which is used to stop bleeding when a blood vessel is broken. Hemophilia occurs more in males than females. A person with hemophilia does not bleed more intensely than a normal person, but can bleed for a much longer amount of time. In severe cases even a minor injury could result in blood loss lasting days, weeks, or not ever healing completely. In areas such as the brain or inside joints, this can be fatal or permanently debilitating.
Signs and symptoms of hemophilia may include:
- Prolonged bleeding
- Frequent bruising
- Heavy bleeding following a dental procedure, accident, or surgery
Hemophilia Treatment
Hemophilia results from a deficiency of Factor VIII and Factor IX, elements of the blood that help form clots. The treatment of this disorder is complicated but effective. Treatment depends on the degree of the deficiency of the Factor VIII or Factor IX. Although there is no cure for hemophilia, new treatments help manage the condition with less complications than in the past. Treatment can include regular infusions of the appropriate clotting factor to help prevent spontaneous bleeds, which can be done at Sandler Cancer Treatment Centers.
