Iron Deficiency Anemia and Treatment
About Iron Deficiency Anemia
Iron deficiency anemia is a common type of anemia which occurs when the dietary intake or absorption of iron is insufficient, and hemoglobin, which contains iron, cannot be formed. Iron deficiency anemia is a common cause of anemia in adults. It can be caused from gastrointestinal blood loss and is common in young females with heavy menstrual periods.
Signs and symptoms of iron deficiency anemia may include:
- Pale skin (pallor)
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Hair loss
- Fainting or dizziness
- Twitching muscles
- Abnormal menstrual cycles
- Irregular heart beat
Iron Deficiency Anemia Treatment
Treatment for iron deficiency anemia usually includes iron supplementation through taking an iron pill. For patients who cannot tolerate oral iron supplements iron replacement is another option. This is safely done as a simple outpatient visit at the Sandler Cancer Treatment Centers.
