Leukemia Information and Treatment

About Leukemia

Leukemia is a cancer of the blood or bone marrow characterized by an abnormal increase in blood cells, usually leukocytes (white blood cells). Leukemia is a broad term covering a spectrum of diseases. There are two main types of leukemia: acute and chronic. Acute Leukemia is the rapid increase of abnormal immature blood cells. The abnormal cells make it impossible for healthy cells to be produced. It is the most common form in children and spreads rapidly if not diagnosed and treated quickly. Chronic Leukemia is the build-up of mature abnormal white blood cells, which can take years for symptoms to show. Chronic Leukemia is most common in older adults and men, although anyone can get it. Leukemia is further subdivided by what type of cell is affected and can be classified as lymphocytic or myelogenous.

Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Easily bruised
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Pinprick bleeds
  • Frequent illness and infection including mouth sores, diarrhea, and pneumonia
  • Anemia

Leukemia Treatment

Depending on the type of Leukemia, different treatments are available. Chemotherapy treatment includes initial, consolidation, and maintenance phases. In most types of Leukemia bone marrow transplant is considered when chemotherapy isn’t entirely effective in eliminating the cancer. Please refer to the previous page for more details about the specific types of Leukemia.
