Leukopenia and Treatment

About Leukopenia

Leukopenia is a decrease in the number of white blood cells (leukocytes) found in the blood, which places individuals at increased risk of infections. Having a low white blood cell count is a side effect of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, leukemia (as malignant cells overwhelm the bone marrow), myelofibrosis and aplastic anemia (failure of white and red blood cell production and poor platelet production). In addition, many common medications can cause leukopenia.

Leukopenia signs and symptoms may include:

  • Anemia
  • Fatigue, headache, and fever
  • Frequent infections
  • Swelling of the mouth
  • Abnormally heavy and prolonged menstrual period

Leukopenia Treatment

Leukopenia treatment depends on the cause.  Steroids and vitamins are sometimes prescribed to activate the bone marrow in order to produce more white blood cells. Some therapies like cytokine therapy and chemotherapy are used or a combination of these different treatments is used.
