Lymphoma Information and Treatment

About Lymphoma

Lymphoma is a cancer that begins in the lymphatic cells of the immune system, the body’s defense mechanism against illness and infection. There are two basic categories of lymphomas. One kind is Hodgkin’s lymphoma or Hodgkin’s disease, which is cancer in a type of cell called the Reed-Sternberg cell. The other category is non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which includes a large diverse group of cancers of immune system cells. Click here for more specific information on non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Some forms of lymphoma are categorized as small lymphocytic lymphoma. These patients have a good prognosis and can commonly live a long life without treatment, whereas other forms are more aggressive, such as Burkitt's lymphoma. However, most of the aggressive lymphomas respond well to treatment.

Signs and symptoms of Hodgkin’s lymphoma:

  • Fever and night sweats
  • Anorexia and weight loss
  • Shortness of breath
  • Itchiness
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Fatigue

Lymphoma Treatment

The treatment of lymphoma depends on the type of lymphoma and the extent of the disease. Hodgkin's disease is one of the most treatable lymphomas and most patients are cured. The treatment for this illness has radically changed over the last several years. Most of these patients are treated with chemotherapy and sometimes with radiation as well.

The treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is more difficult. There are a multitude of treatment options available at Sandler Cancer Treatment Centers. The treatment depends on the aggressiveness and the stage of the lymphoma. Some of the treatments do not include the use of chemotherapy and most of our patients do very well.
