Mastocytosis and Treatment

About Mastocytosis

Mastocytosis is a group of rare disorders of both children and adults caused by the presence of too many mast cells (mastocytes) and CD34+ mast cell precursors in a person's body. Mast cells play an important role in wound healing and are an integral part of the body’s immune system (the body’s defense against illness and disease). There are two main types of mastocytosis: cutaneous (confined to the skin only) and systemic (includes the organs and skin). Cutaneous mastocytosis is much more common than the more serious systemic mastocytosis, which can affect the liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and bone marrow. Because mast cells play a role in allergic reactions the symptoms of mastocytosis are often similar to symptoms of allergic reactions.

Mastocytosis signs and symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Skin lesions and itching
  • Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
  • Food and drug intolerance
  • Infection(bronchitis, rhinitis, and conjunctivitis)
  • Ear, nose, and throat inflammation
  • Bone and muscle pain
  • Episodes of very low blood pressure and fainting

Mastocytosis Treatment

The treatment of mastocytosis usually involves medications.  The diagnosis is usually uncomplicated.  Most patients have a rash and abnormal bone marrow. While this uncommon disorder is easily treated, it is sometimes difficult to diagnose.  Sandler Cancer Treatment Centers provide treatment for people with mastocytosis.
