Multiple Myeloma Information and Treatment

About Multiple Myeloma

Multiple myeloma, or MM, is a type of cancer that begins in plasma cells (white blood cells that produce antibodies). Also called Kahler disease, myelomatosis, and plasma cell myeloma.
Normal plasma cells are found in the bone marrow and are an important part of the body's immune system. Without healthy plasma cells, the body can’t fight off infection and illness. MM is usually diagnosed by measuring the following four key areas: calcium, renal (kidney) function, anemia, and bone lesions.

Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Kidney failure
  • Bone pain
  • Anemia
  • Weakness, confusion, and fatigue
  • Infections

Multiple Myeloma Treatment

Multiple myeloma is treated depending on the stage of the disease.  In early stages with no symptoms, patients will be monitored and given treatment when and if the disease progresses.  For patients who need more aggressive treatment, Sandler Cancer Treatment Centers have a three-drug regimen that has been very effective in this disease, which has a near 100% response rate.  For younger patients a stem cell transplant is another option.
