Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) and Treatment
About Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)
Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) are a diverse set of blood conditions all characterized by ineffective production (or dysplasia) of myeloid blood cells. People with MDS have a 30 percent chance of developing acute myelogenous leukemia. MDS most commonly occurs in people aged 60 to 75.
Signs and symptoms of Myelodysplastic Syndromes may include:
- Anemia
- Frequent infections
- Chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, and sometimes chest pain
- Easy bruising
Treatment for Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)
The treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes has improved greatly. Treatment depends on the specific type of MDS, which is determined from a bone marrow examination and chromosome analysis. In the past, only blood transfusions were available. However, there are a variety of new medications that are well tolerated and effective for treatment of these disorders which are available at Sandler Cancer Treatment Centers.
