Ovarian Cancer Information and Treatment
About Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer forms in tissues of the ovaries, the female reproductive glands in which the ova, or eggs, are formed. Most ovarian cancers are either ovarian epithelial carcinomas (cancer that begins in the cells on the surface of the ovary) or malignant germ cell tumors (cancer that begins in egg cells).
Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer may include:
- Bloating
- Pelvic or abdominal pain
- Pain in the back or legs
- Diarrhea, gas, nausea, constipation, or indigestion
- Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
- Urgency to urinate
- Pain during sex
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
Ovarian Cancer Treatment
Ovarian cancer is one of the most responsive cancers to treat. Unfortunately, some patients do have recurrence. It is often difficult to diagnose this disease at a very early stage.
The treatment usually involves surgery and chemotherapy, depending on the stage of the cancer. For cancer confined to the ovary, surgery may be sufficient. For more aggressive tumors, chemotherapy may be prescribed prior to surgery to help reduce the size of the tumor. At Sandler Cancer Treatment Centers, we recommend that the patients are followed closely, not only by the oncologist, but also by the gynecological oncologist as well.
