Pernicious Anemia and Treatment

About Pernicious Anemia

Pernicious anemia is a type of megaloblastic anemia resulting from inhibition of DNA synthesis in red blood cell production. This is often due to not getting adequate vitamin B12 and/or folic acid from the diet.

Signs and symptoms of pernicious anemia may include:

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Jaundice (yellowish skin)
  • Irregular heart beat
  • Frequent diarrhea
  • Impaired coordination
  • Swollen red tongue
  • Pins and needles sensation in fingers and toes

Pernicious Anemia Treatment

Pernicious anemia requires a simple Vitamin B-12 shot.  It does not require an extensive evaluation but merely a simple blood test.
