Prostate Cancer Information and Treatment
About Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is a cancer that forms in tissues of the prostate (a gland in the male reproductive system found below the bladder and in front of the rectum). Prostate cancer usually occurs in older men and is the second most common form of cancer among men. It can spread to other parts of the body and most commonly spreads to the lymph nodes and bones.
Signs and symptoms may include:
- Pain while urinating
- Difficulty urinating
- Blood in the urine or semen
- Problems with intercourse or erectile dysfunction
- Pain in the hips, upper thighs, and lower back
Prostate Cancer Treatment
Many prostate cancer patients can be cured with radiation, surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or a combination of these different treatments. There are some patients that we monitor closely and don’t prescribe treatment until it becomes necessary. Treatment depends on the patient’s age, overall health, the size of the tumor, and whether or not the cancer has spread beyond the prostate.
The standard treatment for many years has been suppression of the testosterone levels. At Sandler Cancer Treatment Centers we also combine this with chemotherapy agents that have shown very effective results. The treatments are well tolerated and designed for older patients, who most commonly get prostate cancer. A major concern with stage 4 prostate cancer is the spreading of the cancer to the bones, compromising a patient’s bone health. Patients at Sandler Cancer Treatment Centers are given bisphosphonates to reduce pain, promote bone healing, and hopefully prevent further complications from the cancer.
