Uterine Cancer Information and Treatment
Uterine Cancer
Uterine Cancer is cancer that forms in tissues of the uterus (the small, hollow, pear-shaped organ in a woman's pelvis in which a fetus develops). Two types of uterine cancer are endometrial cancer (cancer that begins in cells lining the uterus) and uterine sarcoma (a rare cancer that begins in muscle or other tissues in the uterus).
The term uterine cancer may also refer to any of several different types of cancer which occur in the uterus, including uterine sarcomas, endometrial cancer, cervical cancer, and gestational trophoblastic. Uterine cancer usually occurs after menopause. Being obese and taking estrogen-alone hormone replacement therapy can increase the risk of getting uterine cancer.
Signs and symptoms may include:
- Unusual vaginal bleeding, spotting, or discharge in postmenopausal women
- Abnormal menstrual periods premenopausal women
- Bleeding between normal periods in premenopausal women in women older than 40: extremely long, heavy, or frequent episodes of bleeding
- Trouble urinating
- Pelvic pain
- Pain during intercourse
Uterine Cancer Treatment
Uterine cancer is a very treatable illness if diagnosed early. Patients usually have a hysterectomy to remove the uterus followed by radiation after the surgery. In some cases the ovaries will be removed as well as the lymph nodes, depending on the stage of the cancer. Some patients receive a combination of hormone therapy and radiation.
