Fitness During Cancer Treatment

fitness during cancer treatment, Dr. Steven A. Sandler Chicago and Skokie

Although exercise hasn’t been proven to cure cancer by itself, getting and keeping fit will strengthen your body and help cancer treatment do its job. Regular exercise will also help offset the side effects of treatment and lead to an overall higher quality of life. Exercise can help you sleep better, increase your energy levels, and recover more quickly from treatment. For patients at risk of gaining weight, exercise will help you maintain a healthy weight.

Exercise plans must be tailored to your current level of fitness, disease stage, and what type of treatment you’re receiving. In general, try to get a minimum of 20-30 minutes of exercise five to six days per week and include both aerobic activity such as swimming, biking, or dancing, and a strength activity such as weight lifting or Yoga. Exercise can also help reduce stress and depression.

Always consult with your doctor before starting any fitness or exercise plan.

Recommended activities include:

  • Walking
  • Biking
  • Swimming
  • Yoga , breathwork, Tai Chi, or Qigong
  • Dance Therapy
  • Weight lifting
