Superfood Focus: Probiotics - Yogurt and Kefir
Probiotics are live bacteria found in certain foods that help strengthen the immune system and our bodies’ ability to fight off illness.
Including foods like yogurt and kefir in your daily diet can increase your immune system, something essential during cancer treatment.
Yogurt is packed with nutrients such as calcium, protein, and Lactobacillus, a type of live bacteria responsible for immune enhancement. Yogurt is usually easy on the stomach, inexpensive, and convenient. Buy non-fat or low-fat plain yogurt or yogurt sweetened with honey or fruit juice. If you need extra calories buy 2% fat or full-fat varieties. Avoid buying “Fruit on the Bottom” and artificially sweetened yogurts.
Kefir, a yogurt-like drink, is full of probiotics. Fermented from the kefir grain, it also contains antioxidants, which are found in fruits and vegetables. You can find kefir in the refrigerated section in the produce aisle at most grocery stores or in the dairy section. It comes in many different flavors including vanilla, fruit flavors, and plain. Try it in place of yogurt in smoothies or drink by itself.
